Common Olive Tree (Olea europaea)
Botanical Name: Olea europaea
Common Names: Common Olive Tree
Description: Common Olive is bathed in stunning panicles of fragrant white flowers along the branches from late spring to early summer. It has dark green evergreen foliage which emerges light green in spring. The glossy narrow leaves remain dark green throughout the winter. The fruits are showy black drupes carried in abundance from mid-summer to early fall. If grown indoors, the tree typically doesn't bear fruit. The smooth gray bark adds an interesting dimension to the landscape.
Light: If growing indoors, place near a south facing window with at least 6 hours of sunlight. This will mimic its native Mediterranean climate. Olive trees will NOT tolerate medium or low light.
Soil and Water: Use a well draining potting soil such as a cactus mix and apply a diluted plant food during the growing season. Let the soil dry a few inches before watering again. Olive trees are drought tolerant and don't like constantly moist soil.
Environment: Olive trees like temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit and doesn't require high humidity. An ideal humidity level is between 40 to 60%. This mimics its native Mediterranean environment.
